Meet the top 7 transgender models (Part 3)
Australian model with a successful career, before completing her transition in 2014 was known for her androgynous look and self-describing as living “in between genders”. Thus Andreja Pejic appeared on the runway for both the men’s and women’s show for Jean-Paul Gaultier and the men’s shows for Marc Jacobs in 2011. She also took part in Barcelona’s Bridal Week 2013 modeling for the Spanish designer Rosa Clara.
A year when she underwent the surgery Andreja describes as pretty intense and full of doubts. She faced a lot of rejection while changing career and agencies. She also tells that some people tried to change her mind about transition warning about possible failure as a model. Despite all she didn’t believe that as a trans woman she could never be a face of cosmetic or perfume brand just because the women won’t buy the product. Eventually Pejic became a first trans model to have a profile in Vogue and to be named as face of French cosmetic brand Make Up For Ever. This contract Andreja finds as a great personal achievement and positive message to people of LGBT community because the company also allows her to share her story and trans experience.
Being inspired with her mother in a very young age the model believes that a beauty means to be “comfort in your skin” and to be confident with yourself.
American fashion designer and model Isis King was the first transgender model to complete the reality TV show America’s Next Top Model afterwards becoming one of the most visible trans personalities on television. Graduated from the Art Institute of Philadelphia she has been a runway model for seven years before taking part in ANTM.
The moment when King was noticed by the show host and producer Tyra Banks she calls as a once-in-a-lifetime chance. Being homeless at the time she posed in a shoot centered around the issue of homeless youth and real homeless women. After this shoot King was invited to participate in America’s Next Top Model and became one the fourteen finalists for the eleventh cycle of the show. Being the first trans woman on ANTM she calls groundbreaking because it gave her an opportunity to be noticed not for the perceived difference but her talent. Isis King is also an actress, she appeared in CBS’s The Bold and the Beautiful. Anyway she still dreams about the role that would allow her to captivate the hearts of American viewers “like Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada or Viola Davis in The Help.”
